Subject: Resignation of Fredrick J. Kasparian as Region I VP

January 24, 2005 brings two big changes to my life. I begin my new position in Syracuse, New York. My family and I will be relocating to central New York State. Unfortunately, this is also the day that I will have to resign my position as your Region I Vice President. ASME bylaws state that the Regional Vice President must either work or reside in the region represented so effective January 24, 2005, I will have to regretfully resign my position.

Mahendra Patel has agreed to complete my term. Mahendra has been my close and trusted advisor during my term as your VP and I am grateful for his service and dedication.

I have enjoyed being Vice President of Region I. You have all been a wonderful group to work with during my term. I wish I could have done more. Hopefully, the new organizational changes that ASME is introducing soon will give us the opportunity to work together in new ways in the future.

Letter from Region I VP, Fred Kasparian            November 26, 2003

To: Members of Region I

Subject: ASME International Continuity and Change

Last week, at the Congress in Washington, DC, President Reggie Vachon and Executive Director Virgil Carter presented a template for reorganizing the Society. The Board of Governers commissioned a top to bottom study of operations and functions. The results were presented to the membership as Continuity and Change, available at http://www.asme.org/change . This was the major topic of discussion at all Council, Boards and Committee meetings. The complete presentation, including the notes, is also available on the web at                         http://www.asme.org/change/11_16_03GenAssembly.pdf

The proposed changes are momentous: the Council structure, which has served the Society for the past 20 years, will be disbanded. The new structure and its operation need to be determined. The ASME is asking membership for comments on this new direction as well as questions and concerns. There are several ways for your voice to be heard by attending the meeting, contacting me via email or contacting the President directly at president@asme.org.

Reggie Vachon and Virgil Carter will invite you to general assembly on January 24th, 2004 at the University of Connecticut, in Storrs Connecticut. Notices and reminders will be sent from Headquarters shortly. I strongly urge you to attend this meeting. The President and Executive Director will give the presentation about the continuity and change. There will be a question and answer session after the presentation - you will be able to voice your concerns and have your questions addressed directly. ASME will be sending out announcement and response cards about this important meeting. There will be four assemblies held around the country. This is your opportunity to hear directly from the leadership about these changes.

The main difference will be how the core services and activities of ASME are supported. As Vice President, I am your advocate in this transition. Presently, there is only a framework. The plans will not be finalized by the Board of Governors until late March 2004. After that, there will be a transition to the new structure.

Change is always difficult. Rest assured that there will be a place for everyone in the new organization. Please feel free email me with any of your concerns and questions:  kasparianf@asme.org
